PROJECT JUMPSTART: IDENTIFYING & ADDRESSING DUAL CREDIT PARTICIPATION BARRIERS IN INDIANA HIGH SCHOOLS

New Report Release: The Indiana Latino Institute (ILI) is proud to release Project Jumpstart, a data‑driven report examining access to dual credit and Advanced Placement (AP) coursework across Indiana—and what it will take to expand opportunity statewide.

Access to rigorous high school coursework helps students earn college credit, build academic confidence, and increase their likelihood of completing higher education. However, Latino students in Indiana participate in dual credit and AP programs at rates approximately five percentage points below the statewide average, highlighting ongoing access and support gaps.

Through Project Jumpstart, ILI combined statewide data analysis with insights from students, families, educators, and state leaders to better understand these disparities. The findings identify both persistent barriers and effective strategies already working in Indiana schools—showing that these gaps are real, but addressable.

Expanding access to advanced coursework for Latino students strengthens educational pathways for all students and supports Indiana’s long‑term workforce and economic vitality.

ADVOCACY & SYSTEMS CHANGE

Through our advocacy efforts, ILI is positioned to be the leader in all policy relevant to the issues impacting Latino communities throughout Indiana. Community empowerment and success begins with developing a well-articulated voice, and our advocacy efforts strive to form and deliver a Latino perspective that serves as a solid voice on issues of importance for our community. ILI will advocate for all issues impacting Latino Hoosiers. This work is not limited to Health and Education, but also on topics such as Immigration, Economic Development and Public Safety.

While we work diligently to develop our advocacy efforts on all issues of importance, our strategic objectives include the following:

2024 ILI LEGISLATIVE AGENDA

The 2024 ILI Legislative Agenda reflects where the issues currently stand and provides insight into the goals ILI and other advocates hope to achieve. It is critical to have public policy that addresses community advancement through workforce development, education, health, and public safety to positively impact Indiana.  These issues are discussed each year at the ILI Legislative Breakfast.

2022 COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

This report is an effort to elevate Latinos by amplifying their voices from across Indiana. Throughout 2022, ILI partnered with local organizations in seven locations to host community conversations, gathering insight and feedback on the state of Latino affairs in each community.  This report highlights those issues as well as provides ILI’s recommendations on addressing those barriers.

HIGHER EDUCATION CONSORTIUM

Established in 2017, The Latino Higher Education Consortium provides an opportunity for higher education chancellors, presidents, and leadership to collaborate on strategies for Latino student access, success, and transition into the workforce.  This work is a crucial component of ILI’s effort to change systems and challenge institutions to serve the growing Latino student population better.
